Care farmers visit Kivells Market

This morning we visited Kivells Livestock Market in Holsworthy !

After the usual calf rearing jobs had been completed, we took the Care Farmers back to Holsworthy to have a guided visit and tour of the livestock market.

Mr James Morrish greeted us and told us about the history of the market, from the 1800's to present day; how much the new market cost to build, weekly turnover of the market and what happens during a normal Kivells week.  It was a very interesting talk, thank you James !

This is the link to the market report section of Kivells website, were you find the 12/7/2016 report with our Care Farmers photo taking center stage!

Mr David Kivell very kindly encouraged the Care Farmers to join him up in the auctioneering rostrum whilst he was selling the store cattle.  That was a special moment.  the students could see for themselves how discreetly buyers bid - a twitch of a finger, a slight nod etc - fascinating !

We walked around the whole market and our last stop was the sheep pens.  Shirley very kindly stopped to talk to us all about the sheep, how much they make, what the difference is between hogs/ewes/store lambs etc.  That was also a very interesting talk and I'm sure the students learnt a lot that day - I know I did!
