Care farming group 3 start

This morning saw our 3rd group of Welly Wednesday care Farming students start.

What a busy morning it was too !

After a quick briefing, the students went straight to work on feeding and cleaning out the chickens and feeding/bedding up the calves.

By this time it was 10.30 and it back in the car and off we went to Harper's Feeds Mill on Holsworthy Industrial Estate for a tour of the mill.

Apart from being very noisy at times, it was extremely interesting to see inside the factory and learn more about what happens in the business.

They employ over 60 people, the mill processes feeds 24 hours a day 7 days a week at times, has an electric bill of £36,000 per month and a turn over in 2014 of £43 million pounds.  An amazing business.

Richard and Keith gave us the guided tour.  It was brilliant for the students to see how engineering/computing/nutritionists/raw material buyers/farmers all work together to make the business what it is and that it still comes under the umbrella of "Agriculture".

Thank you Harpers for a great morning, well done group 3 on a great start to your care farming project and roll on next week !
