Its been a rather windy and cold couple of weeks !
The students have been so good at battling on despite what the elements have thrown at us these last couple of weeks. At least its been dry though!
So, session 3 saw us on usual calf rearing duties but with the added bonus of Richard, a feed specialist from Harpers Feeds. Richard talked to us about the importance of using a top quality milk powder, why the calves need access to clean drinking water and straw to eat, separate to the straw they lay on and what makes up the course calf cereal mix we feed to the calves.
He also brought with him a gift - a calf jacket. It has already been in use and we are so impressed we are buying another one. If there is a calf who is slightly unwell, it really helps to keep them warm.
We ended up abandoning plans to start digging the veg plots as the wind was so strong and cold. Instead we warmed up beside the rayburn and talked about what the students had enjoyed so far, learnt so far and what activities we could do for future groups.
Session 4 saw a rather productive morning !
After the calf feeding and bedding up/cleaning out was done, we made a start on the digging of the veg plots. We also continued to wrap an old green house frame with special netting, so it can become a chicken run! A great job was done by everyone involved!
