Wednesday morning saw the Care Farming students come back for their 3rd wellie wednesday morning.
Despite the recent rain, we had a really good morning. The students are now able to start getting the milk ready for the calves on their own, whilst a few of us move the chicken house and run.
After the usual jobs were completed, with welcomed back Richard from Harpers Feeds. He spoke to the students about the importance of the feed we use for the animals, referring back to our Mill visit on week 1. We also then used the weigh tape to record the weight gains of the calves. Most of them are doing very well, gaining more then the optimum 0.8kg per day you are looking for when rearing calves. This was fantastic news. We did however have one pen of calves which haven't gained like they should have. We think this is due to the medicine drench they had the week before. We have been asked by Richard to increase their food and to weigh those calves again next wednesday and to report back to him.
We ended to morning by clearing the grass out of the plastic guards which are protecting the young trees we planted 3 years ago and checking that the trees are growing well and that their wooden stake holding them upright is still secured.
Well done again group 3, you're doing really well. Looking forward to next week.
