Class 2 and 3 Bee Man visits

In the middle of March, both Class 2 and Class 3 of Bradworthy Primary Academy came to Julians to meet our friend Chris, a bee keeper, who has a virtual hive !

What great mornings we had with both Class 2 and Class 3 on their visits to us recently.

Chris is a bee keeper from Chilsworthy and he brought with him a virtual hive, bee glasses, bee suits, his special Queen Bee marker pen, a smoker and most importantly, honey and bread!!

The children were very well behaved and so riveted to what Chris was telling them, it was great to watch. He talked all about a bees anatomy, how it feeds, how it communicates, the jobs of the female and male bees within the hive, Royal Jelly for the Princess bees and how many bees can be found in each hive at different times of the year.  The children found it so funny that female bees drag the males out of the hive as they are not required!

The children got to look at photos on frames from the hive, showing what it would look like "in real life".  They found the Queen Bee by her colour spot and then all; the children decided they needed a spot as they wanted to be a Queen Bee too.

Some children got to wear the bee suit and pretend to use the smoker on the hive.

They were both fascinating mornings and we look forward to welcoming Chris back again soon.
