Classes 4 and 6 of Bradworthy primary Academy have been out recently to do a hedge survey, to try and establish the age of the hedgerow.
Under the guidance of Mr Sentance, both class 4 and 6 have been out to use an official scientific formula to work out the age of one of our hedgerows.
The children have been looking at the different species of trees in the hedge, trying to identify them with the help of books and also looking at all the different types of wild flowers that are now appearing in the foot of the hedge.
Once they were happy they could accurately identify the tree species, they then got to work in groups on a 30 yard stretch of hedge per group. They then applied their findings to the formula and got an average age of the hedgerow, which amazingly dates back to around 800AD.
