Group 3 from Okehampton

Friday morning saw us welcome group 3 of Okehampton College, for their Care Farming project.

They had an interesting morning, as they fed the 16 calves their last milk feed then helped to move them out of the shippen.

Before they went into their new pen that was made ready on Wednesday, we put them all through the cattle crush to be given their Blackleg injection.

We explained to the students about the vaccine, why we vaccinate against Blackleg, how to inject them etc. Andrew was in the crush with 3 calves at a time and the students carefully helped me to draw out the vaccine into the syringe and when Andrew had injected the calves, the students could push the plunger of the syringe to push the vaccine in under the skin.

The students were very sensible and worked well on this task.

We then put the calves into their new pen. By this time, it was time to go back to school. Sometimes we don't know where the time goes in the morning. Roll on next week !
