Okehampton College week 2 Care Farming

Last Friday saw our Okehampton College students back for their second Care Farming session.

It was great to welcome back the students again and this week we had no visits or visitors, so it was jobs all morning and boy, did they do well !

We started as usual by feeding the animals, bedding up the cubicals and seeing the sheep.  No more lambs had been born but we did get the see the single lamb and her mum.  All the other sheep were well.

We then bedded up the last 2 pens ready for calves and Andrew went off to get our first batch.  he came back with 8 British Blue cross calves, 5 boys and 3 girls.  The students helped to unload them from the trailer and sort them into 2 pens, 4 per pen.  We then wrote each calves tag number and on farm date into a log book.

After a few more nets of logs were bagged and several bags of sawdust later, it was time to change and come into the kitchen to show the students things like cattle passports, the online movement service, medicine book, herd records and of course, our website !

After such a full morning, the students returned by taxi back to college where they are creating a folder of their time down on the farm.

Another great session, well done !
