Summer update

Welcome back, we hope you have had a great summer holidays.  here is a quick update as to what has been happening down on the farm over the summer.

This summer has been as busy as ever down on the farm.

We have had fencing done, we have had new gate places put in, we have done more silaging, but the most important jobs have been to give a pour-on to our stock.

A Pour-on is a liquid medicine that protects the animals against worms and fluke over the summer.  It is poured along their spine, between the shoulders and the tail.  The pour-on we chose this year does both fluke and worms.  Most usually only do worms and you need to treat for fluke separately, as a drench ( a liquid medicine that you have to put down their throats).  This is hard work and sometimes quite dangerous and time consuming.  Our all in 1 pour-on this year has been fantastic.  Its made the whole job a lot easier, safer and quicker.  The cattle have responded really well to it and are looking in great condition.  We are very pleased.

Worms can affect the workings of the stomachs in the cattle and fluke affects their lungs.  If an animal has either of these conditions, they will lose weight, lose condition and if left untreated, can result in death.  That is why giving a pour-on is such an important job to be done.

Other jobs that have been happening include booking in a local builder to start repairing the roofs on the barns, booking the scaffold and booking a holiday !!
