Summer update 2017

Well, the summer does seem to have left us again so far this September, but here's a quick run down on whats been happening down on the farm over the summer time.

Work never stops on a farm, even when school does for a few weeks.

We have been busy giving the cattle their summer pour-on, which is a liquid medicine you pour along their backs from their shoulders to the top of their tail. It treats them for things like fluke/worms they may have picked up during their time out to grass.

We have moved the cattle into different fields to give them all fresh grazing.

We are still rearing some Hereford cross calves.

We now have 3 little girlie piggies, which we are fattening up ready for Christmas. They eat a porridge mix made up of warm milk and barley, mashed potato and fallen apples. They love it and doing really well, getting bigger by the week.

We had a day in the middle of August when we hosted a Devon Wildlife Trust event, focusing on Butterflies. Jenny from the Butterfly Conservation joined us and gave us all a really interesting talk about Butterflies, their different life cycles/times to see them on the wing/how to protect their habitats/where to find certain butterflies etc. We then had lunch and took a walk down to our Culm Grassland to see if we could find some Marsh Fritillary Butterfly webs. We did find some, which was great. We also found other really interesting things, please look in our Gallery for the photos.

We also managed to escape the farm for a few days and went up to Oxfordshire to see Countryfile Live. We met Matt Baker, Tom Heap, Ellie Harrison and Charlotte. They are all such lovely people and the event was amazing. A great country show. We also invited them down to Julians next time they are filming in Devon, so watch this space in the future, you never know !!

We are now into log mode, as the weather has turned cooler and more rainy, so we are selling logs again. Its great having the students out as it gives them a job to do each week, keeping our stock piles up !
