Wellie Wednesday Care Farming Sessions 1 and 2

Welcome to our Wellie Wednesday Care farming Sessions update of visits 1 and 2.

6 lucky boys are joining us from Holsworthy Community College to start our care Farming Sessions.

Here is an update of what we have been up to:

Session 1 -

We had a Farm Tour, looking at the animals, where we keep certain things around the farm, looking at what we feed the animals etc.  We then made up some Bird Boxes and took them to a piece of our Culm Grassland and nailed them to the trees.  There were different types of boxes for different birds.  We discussed maybe making an Owl Box !  Deborah from the DWT joined us too, explaining to the boys why the Culm is special, what species we expect to see and when etc.  We then started to measure out where the boys would like to put some vegetable plots in the back garden.

Session 2 -

Today the boys first job was to feed the 6 new calves have in.  Mixing up the milk powder to feed the correct ration to each calf, writing the calves details in a book, bedding them up.  We had great fun!  Then we bagged up some logs to sell at the end of the week.  After a quick pit stop and refuel, we went out and changed our plan on the vegetable plots to incorporate a polytunnel.  Then we started to tie some mesh onto an old greenhouse frame which will become a hen run.  To end with, we all went indoors to warm up, have lunch and look at the farm website!

Its been fun getting stuck in and muddy on the farm and watching the pupils enjoys themselves whilst learning news skills. My favorite part so far has definitely been feeding the 10 day old calves and it was a laugh watching the calves pestering the boys for more milk. Looking forward to next week. Thanks Jen
