Yr 9 Survival day

15th June saw Yr 9 of Holsworthy College come to Julians for their resilience training/Survival Day. Here's what happened ! If you are squeamish, don't read on !

You cannot get any better resilience training then giving 14 years old a dead rabbit to skin, cook and eat can you !

Well, thats what happened.

The day started with another orienteering course, followed by health and safety briefing. Again, the students were split into 2 groups for a 45 minute fire training and knife training. This involved how to handle a knife as a tool and making feather sticks for the fire. Then the groups swapped. After lunch came the rabbits. After being shown how to skin a rabbit, the students were able to have a go themselves if they wanted to.  There was also the option of sticking some mackerel ready for cooking.  We could not believe how many of them wanted to take part. They were amazing. This is something most of them had never done before and they had listened to all the safety briefing on how to do it properly and safely that they did a great job.

The feather sticks were used to gt a good cooking fire going and the rabbit and mackerel were cooked, along with some simple bread rounds. Then it was feast time and once again, so many of the students tried the meat/fish.

We were so impressed with them all, they should be so proud of themselves ! Well done Yr 9.
